Which Actor Won A BAFTA Award For His Role In "I, Claudius"?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The 1976 BAFTA went to Derek Jacobi, already a renowned actor, for his performance as Claudius, the stammering, shy recluse who survived the most dangerous years of the Roman Empire by pretending to be an idiot, and eventually became a successful emperor. While there was no doubt about the brilliance of Jacobi's performance, the acting of the whole cast was widely praised too. Singled out for special praise were Sian Phillips as the icily calculating Livia, wife of Augustus; George Baker's gloomy, savage Tiberius; and most of all, John Hurt as Caligula. In particular, the scene towards the end of his reign, when Caligula believes he is a reincarnation of the god Zeus, and attempts to cut a foetus out of his sister (who is pregnant by him) to prevent the birth of a rival god, caused both shock and admiration at Hurt's realistic portrayal. The series is frequently repeated and is considered one of the BBC's finest achievements.
