The history of print media is very old as far as India is concerned. The first major newspaper on record that started printing in India was "The Bengal Gazette. This newspaper started in the year 1780 under the British rule.

These newspapers printed news about the areas that were under the British rule. The Bengal Gazette started from Calcutta. This was because Calcutta was the first East India Company establishment. This newspaper was started by James Agustus Hickey and since then he is known as the father of the Indian Press.

However, the first newspaper that was printed in an Indian language was Samachar Darpan and it was printed in Bangla language.

The newspaper industry has a rich history in India. Initially, the newspaper industry in India was entirely run and owned by members of the Parsi community in India. In fact, the first printing press was owned by Bhimjee Parikh. He imported it in the year 1670 A.D. However, the first newspaper took a while to print.

The credit for printing the first English newspaper in India goes to Rustomji Keshaspathi in 1777. However, the first vernacular newspaper in India was Mumbai Samachar, printed in 1822. It was printed by Fardoonjee Marzban. The Sangbad Kaumudi was officially the first newspaper in an Indian language, published in Bengali from Calcutta.

The Mumbai Samachar is stil being published, and is considered to be India's oldest running newspaper. There are other firsts too in India's newspaper industry - the first Marathi daily from India was Dig Darsan in 1837, while the first newspaper in Hindi-Gujarati was Vartaman in 1849.
