Does Green Tea Have Any Health Benefits?

Answer Question

Green tea has been used by the Chinese for centuries as a health drink and there is growing evidence that it may actually have some serious health benefits.

Several studies have shown that antioxidants are present in green tea. The Journal of the National Cancer Institute published the results of an epidemiological study indicating that drinking green tea reduced the risk of oesophageal cancer in Chinese men and women by nearly sixty percent. A different study concluded that a compound in green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells.

Less conclusive evidence is available for the effects on blood pressure but there is a suggestion that drinking 5 to 10 cups a day of green tea lowers high blood pressure.

So what is in green tea that could explain these effects? It may be a chemical called EGCG, which is a strong antioxidant. Green tea leaves are steamed, which prevents the EGCG compound from being oxidized, making this tea much richer in EGCG than other types of tea.

Green tea has MANY health benefits.  In Japan alone, the tea leaf is mixed with bread crumbs for frying fish because of its vitamin C content.  It is actually also used as a cleaning spray because of its antibacterial properties.  They use it like this much similar to how we Americans use Orange.  But perhaps the most important health benefit follows.

Green Tea is one of many antioxidants, which are great for neutralizing free radicals.  Free radicals are unstable (missing an electron) molecules that go around inside your body, ripping electrons from your healthy cell walls.  This, in turn, makes them free radicals as well.  The chain continues until the body stops it, which is important because nutritionists believe this is a cause of cancer.  If the body reproduces a damaged cell, it can become malignant (i.e., uncontrollable growth).  Antioxidants helps the body to stop this by providing missing electrons to these free radicals, stopping this chain.  However, Japanese people are accustomed to drinking green tea EVERY DAY to get this health benefit.

Among other ancestral beliefs are that the scent from green tea relaxes you.  Because of this, there are many green tea fragrances, etc.

It's probably caffeine in the tea that makes your heart race, not the tea itself.

Drinking green tea reduces the risk of esophageal cancer. It also kills cancer cells and lowers cholesterol levels, as well as preventing blood clotting which is the , major cause of heart attacks and stroke.
