What Is The Greek Legend Of Oedipus?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

In Greek legend Oedipus was a Prince, Prince Oedipus of Corinth who is told by an oracle that his fate is that he will kill his own father and then sleep with his mother.
Oedipus is (naturally) shocked by this and decides that he must leave the city of Corinth and go to Thebes so that this cannot happen.
However, en route to Thebes he encounters some passing travellers.  A fight breaks out and Oedipus kills them all.
Then he becomes the King of Thebes and marries Queen Jocasta.  He then learns that one of the travellers he killed was King Laius of Thebes, who is in fact his real father but who had abandoned him as an infant.  He later also learns that Queen Jocasta is indeed his real mother. At this point, Oedipus gouges out his eyes as a punishment.
The moral of the tale is that in attempting to avoid his fate, Oedipus actually brings about the circumstances which cause his fate to be met.
