Why Didn't We Need To Be In Vietnam?

Answer Question

Why the war was not needed? Probably cause the communist won anyway. It was not Americas business to get involved directly. Perhaps indirect help, the kind the Somalian warlords are now receiving is always a better option.
Vietnam was a mess before the Americans even got there. It was a mess created by the greed of the colonial rulers; in this case the French. Originally most of North Vietnam was a part of China, the French colonized it and exchanged control of Shanghai from the Chinese to withdraw from the northern parts of Vietnam after the Japanese had been defeated in the Second World War. The Chinese and British handed over control of Vietnam to the French after Ho Chi Minh had declared it an independent country. After Mao rose to power in China he started backing the communist insurgents fighting the French for independence. The French decided to leave Vietnam by the mid 1950s. Because those fighting the French had been communist America decided to finance, arm and support the French effort there. Later when the French left, American involvement started to intensify. The reasons sited were checking the spread of communism.
