Why Was It Called The Red Sea?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

There are many stories behind hot the sea got this name but it is quite evident that the red sea has been named so because of its color. This is because during certain seasons, the red red-coloured Archaebacteria often grow on the surface water because of which the water appeared to be red.  This is the most widely accepted explanation but according to some, the name was given because of the mountains called “Harei Edom” that are red in appearance and line the sea. Yet there is another group of people who believes that the sea has been named so because of the group called “Himyarite” which means red. The name red sea has been translated directly from the Greek word “Erythra Thalassa” that means red sea.
