Why Is There A Dodo In Alice In Wonderland?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

When Lewis Carroll wrote Alice in Wonderland, he introduced the nicknames of some of his friends. The Lory was young Lorina Lidell, the sister of Alice on whom Carroll based his book. The Eaglet was Alice's other sister Edith. As for the Dodo, this was Lewis himself.
Lewis Carroll was born Charles Ludwidge Dodgson on January 28th in 1832. In 1861 he decided to enter the church. He was ordained deacon but his hopes of preaching were dashed due to the speech impediment of stuttering. Whenever Lewis introduced himself under his proper name, he couldn't pronounce his surname and would often say, 'Do-do-Dodgson'.
Not one to take himself too seriously, Charles Ludwidge Dosgson cleverly changed his name to Lewis Carroll, but always remembered that he could not pronounce his surname properly and so the famous Dodo was born.
Lewis Carroll died on January 14th in 1898. His Alice in Wonderland story has been read by millions of adults to eager children ever since.
