When Was Chichester Cathedral Built?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The cathedral at Chichester was founded in the year 1075 and it was built after the seat of the bishop was shifted to this town from the nearby area Selsey. The Cathedral got consecrated in the year 1108 under Bishop Ralph de Luffa. But a fire made it necessary to rebuild the structure, and the rebuilding was not completed until the year 1184. The cathedral got to be consecrated again in the year 1199.

The cathedral continued with its different stages of development because of various reasons. It was destroyed in 1538 during the English reformation and further damages were also being done because of fire and much of the rebuilding was done in early English style.

The spire of the church was also required to be rebuilt because of a sudden collapse in 1861.
