Forests can be grouped in various ways and to different degrees of specificity. They are classified in terms of the biome in which they exist. Leaf longevity is the factor which influences the dominant species of trees in forests, namely evergreen and deciduous forests. There is another distinction, that is whether the forests predominantly comprise broadleaf trees, coniferous trees (or needle-leaved trees) or mixed.
Tropical and subtropical rainforests include tropical and subtropical moist forests, tropical and subtropical dry forests and tropical and subtropical coniferous forests. Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests are also known as tropical rainforests. They are a tropical and subtropical biome.
On the other hand, the deciduous forests are also known as temperate deciduous forests. They are defined as forests in which the trees lose their leaves every year. It is defined as a forest which comprises deciduous trees and exist in areas where the temperatures are mild (that is, not too hot and not too cold) and where there is a lot of rainfall. Deciduous literally means temporary or something which tends to fall off. It is derived from the Latin verb decidere, which means to fall off.
