The frequency with which you have to trim hedges will depend on the type of plant and what do you want it to look like. Trimming ensures that sunlight and water are equally distributed to all the leaves and the plant grows well.
Generally hedges should be trimmed when they are one foot tall. A traditional shearer will do as good a job as an electrical trimmer. You should only use an electrical trimmer if you want to do a quick job and the hedge does not require too much trimming. Prune the hedges till they are smaller than what you want them to be, this will give you space to trim the leaves that will grow on top. Use pyramidal trimming so that the top is narrower than the base. The leaves at the bottom will then receive ample sunlight. This will also make the hedge stable in windy conditions. If exactness of shape needs to be achieved then keep on 'shaping' the hedge with plywood as soon as it is trimmed.
