A mosque is sacred grounds and the Holy place of Muslims where they regularly meet five times a day for collective prayers and where they come for renewal of faith. Mosques have had served different functions for Muslims in different eras. The original Muslims used mosques as a place to solve problems, even affairs of the state were run from the Mosques. Later on schools were incorporated with mosques called "madarassas" in Arabic where Muslims pursued not just religious knowledge but worldly knowledge as well. Spain's mosques were popular in this respect where even philosophers came to debate their subjects. There is generally a huge congregation of believers on Fridays as the Imams delivers religious sermons to Muslims and discuss the ethics that they are supposed to observe. During Ramadan some Muslims stay in the mosques for the last 10 days to pray and to study Quran. Usually the mosques have a general prayer area, some even have auditoriums, an ablution area and a tower which was used as the place where the caller used to call people for prayers before loud speakers were discovered, now they're just a symbol and are part of a mosque's architechture. Some Jamia Mosques have huge lawns which are used to conduct prayers during the Eid days and Friday prayers when most people flock to the mosques.
