What Is OS X?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

OS X or Operating System Ten (it's pronounced Oh Ess Ten) is the operating system used by Apple Mac machines.  Tiger is the most recent version, although later versions are planned for later in the year.   The previous version was called OS X 10.3 Jaguar and Tiger is OS X 10.4, the latest version will be called OS X 10.5 Leopard. (The original OS X was called Cheetah and the next Puma, you get the idea..)

It is a simple, straight forward piece of software (standard installation on all new Apple Macs) , it includes anti virus software, a firewall and a very secure and stable environment.  OS X just doesn't crash.  It has a bulit in spell checker with global dictionaries and support tiny programmes called Widgets.

OS X also includes a file vault, which allows you to securely encrypt your entire home folder (basically your hard drive).
