Turkistan or Turkestan was a historical region situated in central Asia. In aspect of geographic location, it was expanded between Siberia to the north and Tibet, India, Iran and Afghanistan to the south. It got the name from its residents, who were for the most part of Turkey ancestry.
The total area which was occupied by Turkistan was 2,600,000 square kilometers. It was cut across by the Pamir and the Tien Shan ranges, forming west and east Turkistan. West Turkistan came under the Russian rules in the starting of 19th century. West Turkistan is now broken in some parts and gave birth of some new countries such as Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Southern Kazakhstan. East Turkistan was taken over by China quite earlier, in the time of 8th century. It had been included later what the Uygur Autonomous Region of Xinjang is now. In respect of history the Turkistan was always a point of attraction for all the people who wanted to rule over central Asia.
