What Is The ABC Of Acting?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The ABC of Acting is the name for a trilogy of works on acting by he actor/director/teacher Konstantin Stanislavsky.  The books each begin with one of the letters An Actor Prepares (A), Building a Character (B) and Creating a Role (C).  The original Russian version is nine volumes long and this had lead to much concern that the English translations are weak.  New translations cannot be made until the origina copyright runs out.

An Actor Prepares outlines Stanislavsky's early ideas but is written in almost novelistic form and tells the story of Kostya, a young acting student who is at an acting school in Moscow.

Building a Character tells the next part of the story as Kostya learns to work on the external and physical parts of a role.
This is considered the weakest of the three books and was published too late to have stopped the METHOD's ascendency.

Creating a Role is the closest Stanislavsky got to outlining his last work on method of physical action.  This is the book that people should read.
