Mount Elbert is the second highest peak in the United States after Mount Whitney in California. Elbert is the highest peak in the Rocky Mountain range. It is located in Lake County in the American state of Colorado. It is the highest peak in the Sawatch Range. It stands at an elevation of about 14, 440 feet or approximately 4, 401 metres. It is located at a distance of approximately 10 miles or about 16 kilometres southwest of the town of Leadville. It lies within the San Isabel National Forest. The first mountaineer to climb Mount Elbert was H. W. Stuckle in 1874.
Elbert is a fourteener. In American mountaineering terminology, a fourteener is a mountain that is an altitude of more than 14, 000 feet, or over 4, 267.2 metres above sea level. Apart from Elbert, the five highest fourteeners in Colorado are Mount Massive, Mount Harvard, Blanca Peak, La Plata Peak and Uncompahgre Peak.
