One common illness found in small dog breeds is a collapsed trachea. It makes it hard to breath for dogs that suffer from this condition and it often sounds like coughing. One thing to look out for if your dog is suffering from this condition is their weight. Obesity only intensifies the problem. Specialty teaching schools can perform a surgery where rings are inserted around the trachea and the trachea is actually tied to the rings to prevent it from collapsing.
