The capital city of the Bahamas is Nassau. Nassau is also the largest city in the Bahamas with a population of more than 300,000 people. Approximately 70% of all the people in the Bahamas live in Nassau. Nassau is located on the New Providence Island which is a major tourist designation because of its harbour, its history and its beautiful architecture. Many tourists also choose Nassau as their destination because of its proximity to Florida. It is approximately 180 miles East of Florida. Nassau became a popular tourist destination when Castro banned tourism in Cuba. Now, because of the high rate of tourism, most of Nassau's population works in some form of the tourism industry. Nassau is rich in history. It was founded by the British and named after William III of Orange-Nassau in 1695 and was a popular stopping ground and hide-out for pirates, including Blackbeard.
