Is There A Feminine Form Of The Name Brian?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

There is a relatively modern name Brianna (occasionally Breanna or Brianne.) These names were coined as a female form of Brian, which is a much older name than is often supposed. It is an Irish name which may derive from an ancient Celtic word meaning "high" or "noble."

In Celtic myth, Brian was one of three brothers who were given a series of tasks to perform in payment for a crime they had committed; they died while completing the last one. Much later, in medieval Ireland the name was popular due to the fame of king Brian Boru in the 10th century. After that it gradually spread into Scotland and England.

The name Brian has become less popular in recent years; this may be partly because of comic associations with the Monty Python film Life of Brian. Well-known Brians today include the actors Brian Blessed and Brian Cox.
