The Stars and Stripes or the American Flag came to be in use from the 14th June 1777 till now with many modifications Initially, the American flag was supposed to have only 15 stripes and 15 stars in 1794. Now, the US flag consists of 13 alternating stripes of red and white. On the top left hand corner of the flag, outlined by a box, is a collection of 50 stars. These stars are small, white and five pointed based on a blue background in the box. The 50 stars that appear on the American flag is equivalent to the number of states currently present in the US. It is written that, whenever a new state is formed, one new star must be added to the blue canon in the American flag. Interestingly, the blue canon part of the flag, with the 50 stars, can stand alone on its own during naval services, and it used to be referred to as Union Jack.
