How Are The Distances Between Stars And Galaxies Measured?

The system used to measure the distance between different stars is a method called parallax. This system is used to measure the distance of nearby stars that are within a few light years away. The method involves looking at an object from two different points of view and thereby determining their distance. Mans ability to figure out these distances has greatly improved ever since we have been able to launch satellites into space. For stars beyond a few thousand light years the methods used include Stellar Motions, moving clusters, Inverse-square law, interstellar lines, period-luminosity relation.

Stellar motion assumes and relies on the speed of the motion of the star to determine its relative distance. Moving Clusters uses the distance of clusters in which stars are to determine the distance of the stars.
