The respiratory system in birds is the most efficient and elaborate. The birds are very active animals with high metabolic rate. For that matter they need large amount of oxygen.
One way flow of the air
The respiratory system in the birds is arranged so that there is one way of flow of the air through the lungs and the air is renewed after inspiration.
    Para bronchi
In the lungs of birds instead of alveoli tiny thin walled ducts are present called Para bronchi. These Para bronchi are open at both ends and the air is constantly ventilated.
The walls of the Para bronchi are chief sites of gaseous exchange.
    Counter current Exchange
The direction of the blood flow in the lungs is opposite to the air flow through the Para bronchi. This counter current exchange increases the amount of oxygen which enters the blood.
