In recent times a number of species of animals, birds and plants have become extinct or are on the verge of extinction. This phenomenon has greatly accelerated in modern times; mainly after the Industrial Revolution. In fact the number of species becoming extinct due to human activities is significantly more as compared to those that have become extinct or rare due to natural causes.
The main reasons are over-hunting, destruction of the natural habitat of animals due to human encroachments and deforestation and other indirect phenomenon induced due to industrial activity like pollution which is the single largest danger as it damages the eco system on a global scale. For example oil slicks result in vast losses of marine life and acid rains cause irreparable damage to fragile forest eco systems. Another cause which resulted in many species becoming rare or extinct was the introduction by man of alien species including himself in various places in the World which resulted in their competing with the native species resulting in extinction for many of them. Today organizations like animal charity have come forward with an aim to conserve the wildlife and spread awareness.
