What Does The Surname McCrystal Mean And Where Did It Originate?(It Is Sometimes Spelt With A H)

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The surname is of Scottish origin and in Scotland is derived from the forename Christopher.
It was found in the area of Foveran and was once common around Prestwick in Ayrshire during the fifteenth century.
It means 'son of Cristal or Chrystal', the lowland Scots diminutive of Christopher.
In the Galloway area the name is found in the form of  MacChrystal.
In Ulster the name tended to be found in County Tryrone and was probably introduced by Scottish incomers. speelings differ and can be found as Chrystal, Cristall, Cristoll, Cristole, MacCrystall and MacCristall.
