Who Wrote Watership Down?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Watership Down was written by Richard Adams, a prolific English author who was born in Berkshire in 1920.  His latest book, Daniel is due to be published on 1.11.06.
He was originally a Civil Servant, having served in the Second World War.
Watership Down was first published in 1972, although he started the tale in the 1960's.  He used to tell his daughters stories if they were on a long car journey and this is how Watership Down was formed.  Inside the book there is a dedication to his daughters with the phrase 'remembering the road to Stratford upon Avon'.
Although Watership Down was originally turned down by some 13 publishers, it was awarded the Carnegie medal and Guardian award for literature in 1972.  Since then it has been made into a film and is still a favourite with many of the young and the young at heart.
