Eleanor of Aquitaine was the queen of Henry Ii of England, who live from 1133 until 1189. On the marriage, the province of Aquitaine in France, which is an ancient area of south western France that extended from the Loire to the Pyrenees, became an English possession in France.

Eleanor of Aquitaine was an absolutely remarkable woman, even by modern standards. She married King Louis VII of France but divorced him several years later as their relationship was over. She went on crusades and led men into battle, she played an active part in the politics of Europe and was a force to be reckoned with.

After her divorce, she married King Henry II of England, who was only 20 years old at the time. She bore him several children, including Richard the Lionheart. She also fell out with Henry and applied to the pope for a second divorce but this was never granted. She died in her 80s, outliving most of her children and courageous even in her old age.
