The Find my Past site at www.findmypast.com contains many records about the exodus of people from the UK between 1793 and 1960. Newly available are some of the records from passenger lists from ships that left the UK between 1890 and 1960. This is being completed in stages and is currently available up to 1910.

Finding an ancestor on a ship leaving for the USA or Australia can help find out what happened to them if you cannot find them in census records.

The site also contains an indexed register of passport applications between 1851 and 1903 and the Bengal Civil Service Graduation List 1869. It also gives the India Office List of 1933, the East India Register and Army List of 1855, the Indian Army and Civil Service List of 1873 and the East India Company's Commercial Marine Service Pensions List 1793-1833.

These records are useful in determining whether your ancestor was in military service in India, as many were, or part of the Civil service administering the British Empire.
