STD diagnoses reported at GUM (genitourinary medicine) clinics from the UK recorded 2,807 cases of Syphilis in 2005. According to reports infectious Syphillis, which is not one of the most widespread STDs in the UK, has increased by a factor of nineteen from 1996 to 2005. This increase have been fuelled by outbreaks of syphilis among men having sex with men, in particular in the Greater Manchester and London area - around 51% of the diagnosed syphilis infections in 2005 were widen through sex between men. One of the most recent developments has been the spectacular increase in the incidence of syphilis among women and heterosexual men. Though the figures are nowhere as high as STDs like chlamydia this is still cause for worry, as the disease can have severe health implications and for years was believed to be under control in the UK.
