In What Year Was Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday First Celebrated As A National Holiday?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed as a national holiday in the United States. It is a very important event because there are just three individuals who are related to a national holiday. The proposition for the holiday was brought forward by John Conyers and it was brought to vote to the congress in 1979 but was not approved because it fell short of just five votes. After that a national movement to support the cause started and in the year 1983(November 2nd), the president Renal Reagan signed the bill that created the federal holiday on king’s birthday. The holiday however was observed for the first time on 2oth January in 1986.
