Would An Organisation Know I Had Cancelled A Direct Debit If I Did So Through Internet Banking And Didn't Tell Them?

I want to know whether/how companies get to know if you cancel a direct debit but you don't tell them. Does the bank tell them? If not, do they still try to collect the direct debit? Presumably it would not go through if they did?

Generally the direct debit is setup at the vendor's site. What is setup at the bank side is a Bill Pay. If you cancel an automatic payment from the Bank, the vendor will not know. However, if you cancel it from their website, they will know right away and legally they cannot post a transaction to your bank account since the information should be deleted from their records.

However for safety, once you cancel automatic payment on the vendor site, save the confirmation page so you can challenge them in case they try to debit your bank account.
