Someone else asked same question and I answered with some pretty detailed steps. don't have the time to repeat, but look for the Q about the Phillips Universal Remote for the Emerson TV. But a short answer is the mode buttons should work automatically if the remote is same brand as device. Mode buttons are on top, TV VCR DVD SAT etc.
