Perks, incentives, marketing, political advancement, freebies and more money for the same. If one were to take just the money spent on the Presidential race that just ended the total amount could feed most third world nations on earth for 5 years, one more than the Presidency term last!

I so agree with you. Take the money out of the act and we might then have true democracy.
Unfortunately..money and politics go hand in hand. He with the most money and influence will win the election and then those with the most money and influence will run the country thro' the one they have elected.
