Do Terriers Howl?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Terriers are, by and large, one of the quietest breeds of dogs. A howl is generally associated with a fox or a wolf, but not with a terrier. Terriers bark loudly only if they are intimidated or provoked by people's cruelty towards them, or if they want to warn their masters about a stranger approaching. If a terrier is angry, it will gnash its teeth and growl, but the sound is barely audible, almost like a mumble, unless you are the potential victim that is standing in front of it.

When it is sad or unwell, it generally lets out a low-pitched shrill cry or yelp that is practically inaudible unless you are within the earshot of the terrier. But howling is not a sound that is associated with terriers. Dogfights between terriers are the occasions when the terriers are usually at their loudest, letting out sounds ranging from a low-pitched wince when the terrier is in pain to a sharp grunt or growl when the animal is in a stronger position than its opponent.
