Twenty-nine 'Carry On' films were made in total between 1958 and 1978 along with a compilation film.

The first Carry On film was 'Carry On' sergeant, which was released in 1958. The second Carry On film, 'Carry On Nurse', was released in 1959, and was the top grossing film of that year.

The films were well known for the use of comedy actors, and many actors appeared in more than one film. Recurring actors included Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Hattie Jacques, Joan Sims, Charles Hawtrey, Bernard Bresslaw and Barbara Windsor.

The films usually contained slapstick humour and parody and in 1963, when Talbot Rothwell took over as screenwriter, the films contained even more humour, with more parodies and sexual humour. The Carry On films from the 60s are the most popular, and when screenwriter Talbot Rothwell left in 1974, the series went into decline. Many of the actors didn't appear in the later films, and 'Carry On Dick' was the last Carry On film that Sid James, Barbara Windsor and Hattie Jacques appeared in.

In 1992, another Carry On film was made, but many of the actors were new as the majority of the earlier cast had died, and Barbara Windsor refused to appear in the film after reading the script.

There have been rumours that a new Carry On film is in production, and will be directed by Peter Richardson.
