FATLAD is an acronym for the Six Counties. The Six Counties are the 'occupied' counties of Northern Ireland that are collectively known as the province of Ulster. They form part of the United Kingdom, but are arguably part of Ireland really. They are not part of Great Britain, although citizens of Ulster may request a British or an Irish passport.
FATLAD is the name of the counties, placed into an acronym. F is for County Fermanagh, A is for County Antrim, T is for Sam Maguire winning County Tyrone. Sam Maguire is the name of the trophy given for gaelic football. L is for Londonderry, which is also known as Derry, which is close to the Irish name Doire. London was added by the English merchants to exercise control. The other A is for County Armagh, mentioned lots on the television during the Troubles, South Armagh was essentially bandit country. D is for County Down, another part of bandit country. Bandit country means it was a place where paramilitary activities were rife.
