By format your system I assume you mean reinstall the opsys.  Another assumption you are talking about Windows.

This is easy to do if you have system restore disks from the vendor. If not, I would try to obtain them from the maker of your computer. (i.e. Dell, HP, etc.). If you cannot get the restore disks, you might be in for a lot of work. You'll need the drivers for your system, a copy of windows install disks, any software you are currently using, and the product key for windows.

Normally if you have the restore disks you just insert the first disk and when it ask you select restore.

If you are taking the long route, first thing to do is determine the windows product key. There are ---} Programs available to locate the key {---.

Obtain the drivers necessary for your computer and save them on a removable disk. Drivers will be available on the vendor web site but might take some searching. It is important to do this prior to reformatting the system. If you do not you might not have any network support and no access to the internet.

Boot your system and go to setup. Different computers use different keys to enter setup but most will pop a message telling the correct key. The message will look like "DEL to enter setup" or F10 to enter setup". After you get into setup, go to the entry for "Select boot device" an make sure that your primary boot device is your DCD or DVD drive.

Boot with the windows install disk and follow the on screen instructions. If you want a truly clean reinstall, delete the existing partitions and do a complete reformat when prompted. (Not a quick format).

Reinstall the drivers that you previously saved.

Restore any software that you were using. You will also need product codes for most Microsoft products. Usually they can be found on the install disks.

Install a good virus program to prevent future problems.
