Cyanocitta is defined as the genus to which the species of New World jays belong. Jays are passerine birds. They belong to the family Corvidae. The Cyanocitta genus comprises only two species of New World jays. These jays are blue in colour and have crests, which are of a different colour from that of their heads. The ranges to which these jays belong usually do not overlap with each other.

The two species in the genus Cyanocitta are the Cyanocitta cristata, which is commonly known as the blue jay and the Cyanocitta stelleri, which is commonly known as Steller's jay. The Cyanocitta cristata or the blue jay is native to the eastern part of North America and is bright blue in colour with a grey breast. Its relative, the Cyanocitta stelleri or the Steller's jay, is native to the western part of North America. Its head and upper body are black in colour.
