Is Lack Of Sleep Dangerous?

I've gotten 5 hours of sleep in 3 days. I don't know if this is normal or what. I am dead exhausted during the day but once night comes around i am wide awake and cant get to sleep no matter how hard i try. I take 2 NyQuil but they don't do anything. And i cant sleep during the day because i am very active. So i don't know.

Sleep deprivation is extremely serious it can have serious effects on your health, physically and mentally. Inadequate rest impairs our
ability to think, to handle stress, to keep our immune system working and to moderate our emotions. In fact, sleep is so important to our
overall health that total sleep deprivation has been proven to be
fatal: Lab rats denied the chance to rest die within two to three
    weeks.

Without sleep, the brain's is unable to function quickly, so he brain works harder to counteract sleep deprivation effects, but
operates less effectively: Concentration levels drop, and memory
    becomes impaired.
Insufficient rest can also cause people to have
hallucinations. Other typical effects of sleep deprivation include:
    • depression
    • heart disease
    • hypertension
    • irritability
    • slower reaction times
    • slurred speech
    • tremors.

It also is makes you prone to weight gain. Which is never good. So in summary sleep deprivation is extremely dangerous.

Wow, Pronetolie is telling it like it is and no holds barred! If you are driving or handling machinery on that small amount of sleep, you are putting yourself and others at great risk, so go and see your doctor about it. My partner is the same as you, and has been like that for about 10 years or more, he won't see a doctor about it as he is convinced it won't help and he doesn't like having tests, but he is constantly exhausted and it's no fun to be around him a lot of the time. For the sake of your friends and family, see if you can sort this out sooner rather than later.

If this has been going on for a long time, or happens regularly, perhaps you should be looking for underlying causes.  There are a number of things which can cause sleep disturbances; anxiety, clinical depression and bipolar disease to name a few.

Anxiety may keep a person awake late into the night, but, at the very least, anxious people tend to fall asleep eventually, even if it is only just before time to wake up!  Depressed people, on the other hand, often fall asleep without difficulty but then wake up halfway through the night and cannot get to sleep again.  Bipolar people swing between being hyperactive and depressed.  They often hardly sleep at all during their "manic" phases.

From the little you have said, I wonder if you could be bipolar, as you
seem to have some of the symptoms.  There are medicines which can treat
        this condition effectively these days.

Sleeping pills are not a good thing to have to rely on long term, and sound as if they are not working in your case anyway.  If the situation does not right itself in short order, do see your doctor, not for more pills, but to get an investigation underway into what is causing your problem.

Any activity in excess or lack of it is dangerous....Try doing physical activity or playing active sports that tires you out and you enjoy at the same time so that it may induce sleep cycles. Try meditation/yoga or imagine going down the memory lane o soothe your mind and prepare it to relax further to sleep...try reading your favourite novel or have a warm glass of milk at night just before going to bed....
