This is a quote from Richard Bach. He is an American author, born June 23, 1936, in Oak Park, Illinois. His best known work is the best-selling novel, 'Jonathan Livingston Seagull'. He wrote the book in 1972 and a movie was made the following year based on the book. Richard Crenna was amongst those who provided voices for the movie.

The story is based around a sea-gull, named Jonathan, who is is sick and tired of the boring life he has. He is expelled from his sea-gull clan and heads out into the world in search of wisdom.

Richard Bach has loved all things flying related since he was a boy and wrote a number of books which used flight in both direct and indirect context. He is also a qualified pilot and served in the United States Air Force and, amongst other flight related jobs, was a stunt flyer in the 1971 movie 'The Red Baron'.

This quote comes from the Richard Bach novel, "Jonathan Livingstone Seagull," which has been a cult classic ever since it was first published in 1970. It tells the story of a young seagull who takes to the skies and learns about freedom, true wisdom and "the meaning of life" from older, wiser seagulls who take him onto a higher level (spiritually as well as physically.) I think the quote you mention is from a gull known as "the Elder" but am not sure. Jonathan eventually becomes a teacher himself, passing on the message of enlightenement to other gulls. Among other things, the novel is a reflection on the nature of freedom and happiness.
