The results of the Ganga action plan were damaging to the entire nation as the sunk cost exceed Rs 900 crore.
There were shortfalls in the allocation of resources. Of the total domestic sewage of 5044 mld, in 110 towns selected for pollution abatement along banks of river Ganga, the plan addressed itself to process only 2794 mld. The reported achievement of the participating States was only 39 per cent of truncated target. The assets created in the Scheme suffered impairment because of technical design flaws and their components, problems in land acquisition, contract mismanagement, lack of adequate maintenance, and in general because of lackadaisical attitude of the States.
