Pain is not necessarily the hallmark of a good massage. Although certain forms of massage, such as those which aim to release tension in the deep tissues, will require the therapist to use stronger pressure, traditional Swedish relaxation massage should be just that--relaxing and not painful.
Massage can hurt when the therapist uses too much pressure, or if the patient has underlying health problems in the area being massaged. Most certified therapists will want to know if the pressure they are applying is too weak or too strong and the patient should always provide them with feedback during the massage to ensure that the treatment is comfortable. A good therapist will take the initiative and will ask the patient if the pressure is not too strong.
Although most forms of massage should not be painful, some patients will feel some soreness, tenderness and pain following a treatment. This will be very similar to how muscles feel after a work-out at the gym and the muscle soreness should go away within 24 hours.
