1997 Dodge Ram Van Is Blowing Black Smoke, What Could Be The Problem?

The van is running rough and blowing black smoke.. It smells like the gas is not burning right

    It sounds to me like the oxygen sensor in the exhaust system is covered with soot and needs to be replaced to get the fuel mixture right, disconnect the battery before replacing the sensor and reconnect after install to reset the computer and clear the codes.

      Probably need to replace the fuel pressure regulator

        Valve seal or seized oil ring on pistons.

        It's the egr valve.  The egr valve is the common problem for the dodge ram 318 and 360
