Born on June 14, 1969 in Mannheim, West Germany, Stefanie Maria Graf (known the world over as Steffi Graf) is a former world number 1 tennis player who dominated the world tennis scene in the late 1980's and early to mid-1990's, winning a still-unbroken record 22 titles in Grand Slam events between 1987 and 1996. She won the Australian Open four times (in 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1994), the French Open six times (in 1987, 1988, 1993, 1995, 1996 and 1999), Wimbledon seven times (in 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1995 and 1996) and the U.S. Open five times (in 1988, 1989, 1993, 1995 and 1996).
In 1988, she became the first and only player (so far) to win all four Grand Slam events and win an Olympic gold medal, thereby completing what is known as a "golden slam". The five results of that "golden slam" are as follows: Graf beat Chris Evert 6-1, 7-6 in the Australian Open women's singles final, Natalia Zvereva 6-0, 6-0 in the French Open women's singles final, Martina Navratilova 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 in the Wimbledon women's singles final and Gabriela Sabatini 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the U.S. Open women's singles final, before grabbing the Olympic gold medal, beating the U.S. Open losing finalist Sabatini 6-3, 6-3 in the Olympic women's singles final in Seoul, South Korea.
