Like old fashioned windmills, today’s wind machines use blades to collect the wind’s kinetic energy. Windmills work because they slow down the speed of the wind. The wind flows over the airfoil shaped blades causing lift, like the effect on airplane wings, causing them to turn. The blades are connected to a drive shaft that turns an electric generator to produce electricity.  ♥ Nassy

Windmills are machines that are engineered to run on the energy of wind. Usually windmills have three basic functions. Windmills are used to grind grain when the blades of the mill are connected to the grinding machine. Windmills are also used to pump water and most recently windmills are designed to produce electricity as the blades are connected to turbines that produce electricity. These are called wind turbines.
