What Is The History Of Football Club Accrington Stanley?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Accrington Stanley may be more famous nowadays for their mention in a 1980s milk-advert, but they are actually a football club from the town of Accrington in Lancashire.

The club should not be confused with the similar Accrington FC who were amongst the 12 original members of the Football League which was formed in 1888.

Accrington Stanley was formed in 1891 but it's original name was Stanley Villa. This was changed in 1893. The club disbanded but was reformed after the First World War. The club fell into monetary difficulties during the 1960s and decided the best thing to do was to call it quits and resign from the Football League, which they did so in the middle of the 1961/62 season.

In 1970 the club was reformed once more and played at the Fraser Eagle Stadium. They have worked through the ranks of non-league and have finally reached League Two.
