The latest available figures how that in 1994 3087 miles of railway track was electrified. This is 30% of the total rail network. A further 245 miles of electrified track make up the London Underground. A paltry 78 miles is accounted for by other light and metro railway systems such as the Docklands Light Railway and the Glasgow underground. The Isle of Man has 22 miles of electrified railway. The main systems in place are the electrified third rail and overhead cables. In 1955 the so-called Modernisation Plan initiated a widespread electrification roll out which was largely in place by 1967. An earlier report, the 1931 paper from the Committee on Mainline Electrification is widely believed to have slowed the process due to over-cautiousness. It recommended further electrification on suburban lines but was inconclusive on the case for electrification on mainlines.
