Carnivore means meat eater. It refers to any animal, plant or human that consumes meat. It is of Latin origin. Carne means 'flesh' and vorare means 'devour'. Carnivore is the opposite of herbivore which refers to any living thing that feeds exclusively on plants.

The types of carnivores are as follows. Some animals survive on a diet that consists solely of meat. They are called obligate carnivores. Other carnivores like insects or spiders seldom eat meat but are still referred to as carnivores. Carnivores that only eat insects are known as insectivores. Carnivores that only eat fish are referred to as piscivores.

Examples of carnivores are as follows. Certain dinosaurs like the Tyrannosaurus were obligate carnivores. Tigers, lions, leopards, pumas and cheetahs are other good examples. Sharks, toothed whales, octopuses and squid are also carnivores. There are also plants that are carnivorous like Nepenthes mirabilis but they are mainly insectivorous. Domestic dogs are also widely considered to be carnivorous.
