Well in depends what type of butter cream you are using. If you are using Italian butter cream then it might be difficult, but if you are using the common butter cream with butter, sugar, and milk then add a little milk, sugar and butter and mix them. This will smooth the icing.

    Enjoy.

You need to use a long, flat, icing spreader. You can get one from Michael's craft store, or any other store that sells cake decorating supplies. If you can't buy one, then use a untensil that is very long - more than six inches - to smooth the icing.
Do the sides first and then the top.

I used a flat cake spatula and dipped it in warm water being careful to not get too much water on the cake itself.  Go around the cake just like you were decorating it and don't worry some frosting will come off. Just remember not to pull the frosting or you'll get open spaces where you see the cake.

I took the Wilton Cake Decorating classes, and if you're using the butter cream I think you are, then once you put a crumb coat on and let sit until it dries (not long) then actually ice your cake. Once that's done, use parchment paper....lay a piece on the cake and lightly smooth with your hands/fingers all over the cake. That's how we were taught to get a smooth cake. It works for me every time. Good luck!
