In 1598, Shakespeare's company, the Queen's Men, entered into a dispute with their landlord, one Giles Allen. Allen wanted to develop the land on which the company's theatre, called the Theatre, was built. Things came to a head when Allen wanted the company to move out. While he was away on a Christmas break, the company completely broke up the Theatre, and moved the lot, lock, stock and barrel, down Bishopsgate, down Gracechurch Street, over London Bridge to Bankside. Where, some 12 -15 months later, the Globe opened to a brand new presentation of Julius Caesar, written by William Shakespeare!
