They are caused from snow build up on step mountain slopes. After so much snow falls in one place is cannot stay in place so it slides and as it slides it builds up more and more as it catches all the snow and anything else that get in its way. Sometimes a loud noise will cause the snow build up to move from the vibration of the noise its self, causing a slight shift in the snow and the movement starts the avalanche. Ski patrols blast the snow build up with explosives and make it move sometimes which is called a controlled avalanche. An avalanche can travel very fast and a person is very lucky to out run it if they are in its way.

An avalanche is an abrupt and rapid flow of snow, often mixed with air and water, down a mountainside.  FOLOW THIS LINK TO LEARN MORE THAN YOU CARE TO RE:  AVALANCHES MY DEAR AND GOOD LUCK TO BOTH OF YOU.www.en.wikipedia.org

I don't know much, but I do know they are usually caused when warmer weather comes and the top layers of snow get lose and eventually fall causing damage.

Usually at the very top of a mountain or ridge where the winds are driving snow from one side , there is more snow piled up on the opposite side of that mountain or ridge, because the wind drops the flakes it is carrying because the speed is slowed.  The amount of snow starts to build a shelf which extends out from the peak. There is no solid ground or other snow pack supporting the newly deposited snow. By it's own weight or because a loud sound/vibration/air wave causes motion and/or a crack the unsupported material falls down the slope, thanks to the force of gravity.
