The error control function is performed by the "logic link control" the sub layer of the data link layer in the OSI model.

The error control is used to transfer error free data across the network. As, data has to be moved in the form of electromagnetic waves/ signals across the computer networks. Due to different attenuations these signals are modified to some extent and the corrupted data is received at the destination. This corrupted form of the data does not represent the original data sent by the sending device.

Thus, different error control techniques are used to handle this situation.
The cyclic redundancy check is a way to control the data transmission errors.
In order to implement the error control function, data is passed through an algorithm before sending it over the transmission media. This algorithm calculates a cyclic redundancy check number that is known as the checksum.

This checksum is attached with the original data that is to be sent. At receiving end, this checksum is separated from the data, and same algorithm is used to calculate the CRC number for that data. If that newly calculated checksum matches with that separated from the data, the transmission is error free otherwise the data is assumed to have errors. The destination device requests the sender for the retransmission of this erroneous data.
